Connecting the MCP
The MCP is a small helper program on your computer. It lets Claude Code read and change your SLB site through the WordPress admin API. This page gets you connected.
What you need
- Node.js 18 or newer on your computer.
- Claude Code (for example the VS Code extension).
- An SLB site with Developer Mode on.
- WordPress 5.6+ over HTTPS (Application Passwords).
Set up
- Turn on Developer Mode. , tick the box and Save (see enable safely).
- Copy the MCP folder. Take the
mcpfolder from the plugin (wp-content/plugins/slb/mcpon the server, or from the zip) to a folder on your computer. - Install it once. Open a terminal in that folder and run
npm install. - Generate the credential. On click Generate MCP credential. The page shows the connection details once. Copy them immediately.
- Save the settings. Create a file named
.envinside themcpfolder with what the page showed:WP_URL=https://your-site.com WP_USER=your-admin-username WP_APP_PASSWORD=abcd efgh ijkl mnop qrst uvwx
- Register it with Claude Code. In a terminal run the command shown on the page:
claude mcp add slb -- node "/full/path/to/mcp/src/index.js"
Or add a.mcp.jsonfile to your project:{ "mcpServers": { "slb": { "command": "node", "args": ["/full/path/to/mcp/src/index.js"] } } } - Restart Claude Code so it loads the new server.
Keep the .env private. The Application Password works like a key to the SLB tools. Never email it, never commit it to a public repository. If it leaks, regenerate it. It only works for SLB routes, and you can also revoke it at .

Test the connection
Ask Claude:
List the SLB sections available on my site.
Success looks like a list of section names. If you see an error, see Troubleshooting.
First prompts
List all pages on my site that use SLB, with their status.
Show me the sections on the Home page and summarise what each one says.
Create a draft theme from the live one, then tell me when it is ready.
What the MCP can and cannot do
- It works on a draft. You see the result with a preview link first.
- It cannot publish by itself. You press Publish Draft Theme in the browser.
- It uses an App Password limited to SLB routes, not your WordPress login.
Next: Developer Mode.
